Under the slogan ‘Happy New You,’ Lakme Salon began its network-wide sustainability project, furthering this aim. Lakme Salon, one of the largest salon chains in the world, intends to minimize its carbon footprint. The company thus wants to develop a sustainable business model with this effort. While also inspiring its 1 million+ consumers to embrace environmentally friendly behaviors.
Lakme Salon brings the goal of ‘Beautify the Future’ to life by educating talent. 115 Lakme Academy powered by Aptech locations have been established. Lakme also provides career and entrepreneurship options for its 4000+ employees.
In 2018, Lakme Salon made the initial steps in this direction by implementing tiny modifications to their operations, such as switching to LED lighting, installing water-saving nozzles, and maintaining ideal a/c temperatures in salons. In addition, they planted 40,000 trees, which will, in 20 years, offset the whole carbon footprint of 69 Salons due to electricity consumption.
Taking this initiative a step further, the campaign’s second phase, which begins on December 13, will require all 460+ salons to execute several green acts. Among these initiatives are:
- A complete shift to electronic bills, thereby reducing paper consumption and waste reduction.
- Implementing waste segregation in the salons for better waste management
- Installation of energy-efficient fixtures and equipment that will reduce energy consumption by up to 75 pc
- Switching to biodegradable and more nature-based consumables
- Introducing glass bottles and paper coverings – replacing single-use plastic waste with minimal
- Adding oxygen-rich indoor plants
future plans and goals
While the network’s environmental initiatives are being implemented, they have also opened eight green salons alongside its franchise partners this year. These salons are built with an environmentally friendly design and materials. In 2020, Lakme will expand this with other partners.
On purchase of any retail product, customers will receive an eco-friendly scrunchie with plantable seeds, as well as a reusable bag provided by the NGO Goonj. They can also spin the ‘Wheel of Happiness’ to get exclusive deals for themselves. Every time a customer redeems an offer, Lakme Salon will plant a tree on their behalf. In addition, every Showstopper who joins their Runway Rewards reward program will receive an environmentally friendly present, such as scrunchies, plantable seed bombs, and bamboo speakers.
Lakme Salon has 460+ salons with over 360 franchise partners in 154 locations across India. The COCO, FOFO, and FOCO models are used by the company. It helps aspiring entrepreneurs set up and run their own Lakme Salon using a thorough 6P franchising model. It also assists tenured staff in opening their own salons through its LEAP program.
